Jurka Kopcik On the issue of origins of the princes Ostrogski
The work studies the origins of the princely family of Ostrogski and its sideline - princes Zaslawski, who were well-known in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Commonwealth in the 14th-17th centuries. The central point of the research is critical analysis of the entire historiography dedicated to the origins of the princes Ostrogski, with focus on crucial points of other authors’ works suggesting new theories on the origins of the princely family. Based on the review of the historiography, the author identifies the most well-grounded versions of the origins of the Ostrogski among all that have been suggested so far. The research also tackles the issue of the origins of the name of the town of Ostrog and its connection to the heraldry symbols of the princes Ostrogski. In the conclusion the author introduces his own version of the origins of the princes Ostrogski suggesting they originated from the princes Gurowski, and indicates strong and weak points of this theory.
